Cactus gardening in Zone 8b. Desert plants and Cacti in a water wise rock garden. Cacti like Echinocereus and Echinopsis to Ocotillo and Agave, beautiful flowers, bold evergreen structure, and blooms all colors of the sunset. A trial and error journey to discover cold hardiness where only the fittest will survive hot temperatures, high humidity, and frosty nights in the teens, not to mention an onslaught of rock squirrels and cactus beetles.

Echinocereus reichenbachii subsp. caespitosus - Texas Lace Cactus can come in many spine colors and have quite a lot of variation in flower colors and sizes. I would say the cactus above is subspecies 'caespitosus' from Central Texas given the extra large flower and the relatively increased projection of spines in contrast to the more typical reichenbachii (below) where the spines are tightly held and can easily be touched without the fear of retribution.
